Re: big coolers

Somewhat related, I would like to find 120mm fans that have durability as their main feature. MTBF is not a spec that is found often when shopping for fans. The priorities in order for 90% of my fan needs: 1. Long life 2. Air flow 3. PWM 4.Noise Last time I searched for dual ball bearing PWM fans, v...

Re: Cost of building the site.

Looks like a little over $220/month if amortized out over 2 years. I'm willing to sign up for a monthly payment of a percentage of that, if we can get enough others to help.

Re: Server ordered

Good ol' Westmere! I'm not sure if you will need 32GB, but 4GB is a little light. IIRC, that's a 3-channel memory system, so the optimal memory config would probably be 12, 24, or 48GB for all channels populated evenly.

I figured you might be trying to avoid copyright issues, but I don't even know if a volunteer computing project out of Berkeley would even be copyrighted, and even if so, our use of it would probably be allowed if it was not for profit.

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.

I have had good luck with CPUs, but not perfect luck. I've had quite a few Haswell Xeons get to me with at least one memory channel bad. Looking at prices, performance, and power use, according to my little spreadsheet, the best bang for the buck is simply the 3700X right now. All the Zen3's and Ze...

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.

I like your premise and I want to follow your progress. As far as I could tell last time I looked, Epyc hardware was just too expensive for me. First-gen Naples CPUs are at a disadvantage due to their essentially half-speed AVX2 operation. Second-gen Epyc are really good, but are still pretty expens...

Re: [TN-Grid] World Gene Expansion Challenge 2021

Right now it is somewhat difficult to receive tasks. I was heating the home with TN-Grid lately. I'll tweak my setup now and check back tomorrow whether or not I will have to switch to some other project. This would indicate that we may not need the entire TeAm to participate. If you wish to contin...

Re: [TN-Grid] World Gene Expansion Challenge 2021

It overlaps slightly with the Sierpinski Birthday Challenge, I think. I'd want to learn about whether enough work will be available, and what the task deadlines are. But I am tentatively in if the TeAm want to join. Edit: Looks like 5 day task deadlines, so that would be when to start "bunkerin...

Somewhere I had read that the EU spent more time negotiating price than some other countries, and this affected its place in the queue for vaccines. I don't know if there's any truth to that.

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited

So something odd has popped up for me now that I have had time to look at what MLC@Home is doing. It looks like I can get better max GPU utilization in Windows(!) Linux seems to top out around 80% with no CPU going, but Windows can exceed 90%. Can anyone corroborate this?

@Skillz, are you simply using SSH or do you use remote desktop software? Typically what you will get without a dummy plug is 640x480 resolution if you remote into the dektop.

The only real problem I have had with AnyDesk is that sometimes it is really laggy, especially at the login screen. Often I have my Mint boxes reject my password because I'm typing too fast. I have to literally type no more than one character per second when this occurs. It's only that bad at the lo...

@crashtech The i7-8700K only has 12MB of L3 cache. Each DIV task currently requires 3.5MB, therefore its not able to run all tasks from L3 cache alone. Try running 3 tasks of 4 threads. Great job in the challenge by the way ;) Aww, crap. I forgot about the stupid anemic cache! Thanks, and thanks! :)
