I'd jump on it immediately if I hadn't spent so much already on computer-related stuff this month!

Re: Lucky me...
I don't want to piss in your Wheaties, but I have never heard anything good about daytrading as a long-term money maker. It's a little like winning at Vegas, most of us need to learn when to walk away. The big boys have powerful computers located as close to the stock exchange as possible to get ahe...

Re: Used CPU Discussion
In my usual un-scientific and impulsive way, I found a pair of E5-2690 v4 CPUs for $450. I should be able to get about $150 for the pair of E5-2678 v3's, so this is a ~$300 experiment. I will get slightly better IPC, 300 MHz more speed at full load, 8 more threads, and possibly lower power consumpti...

Re: Used CPU Discussion
Yes, in fact on the dual socket Xeons I leave a minimum of 2 logical cores for the GPU, sometimes more depending on the project. At other times it does not seem to matter how few cores I try to use for a CPU project, the GPU is impacted unless CPU computing is suspended. It's not always like that, a...

Re: Used CPU Discussion
I wish I could remember when the performance penalty was observed. It occurred while running a GPU and CPU contest simultaneously, something I don't think that you do often or at all, StefanR5R . But I have to try to keep my compute power relatively compact, so every PC must have at least one powerf...

Re: Used CPU Discussion
Which projects are you running that the Xeon is falling short on? I'm running an RTX 2070 on a Xeon E5-2670V3 and I've never noticed it not keeping the GPU at 100% or projects running slower than my 2070 in a Ryzen machine. I'm running a 3070 off of a used i5 6400 and it seems to run great. Well, I...

Re: Used CPU Discussion
I think the best bang for your buck Distributed Computing CPU will be AMD Ryzen based CPUs. Even first generation such as the 1950x or the first generation epyc CPUs. They're cheaper than Intel based on core count alone and usually have more cores than Intel does which distributed computing can uti...

Used CPU Discussion
I thought it might be useful to have a catch-all thread to discuss used CPUs, particularly which ones currently represent the best value for DC. To begin, I have two dual CPU Xeon E5-2678v3 systems that I have been thinking of replacing. Due to space constraints, I need all my rigs to run at least o...

Re: Used Nvidia GPU Market
I don't think I would want to deploy a large quantity of them. I need to keep transitioning to more powerful GPUs as I am space and power constrained at this point. Really the interesting unit is the P104-100, at least you get 1070 level performance with it. But those are not as common.

Re: Used Nvidia GPU Market
I'm trying to win a few of those 1060 "mining only, no video output" cards myself. let me know how well they do. I'm trying to build a rig with 8 of them. I finally had a chance to get it setup tonight. So far - I'm pretty impressed. I paid $54 including tax and shipping. I have it curren...

Re: Used Nvidia GPU Market
Icecold , yes, I bought it on the [H] forum. Seller seems legit, he was very responsive and has some other Nvidia 10 series cards as well. I'm needing to move up from 1070-level performance though as I have power constraints now. What I'd like to see are cards like 2070 Super and 2080 come down to ...

Re: Used Nvidia GPU Market
I bought one of those output-less miner cards that was supposed to be the equivalent of a 1070, but was not able to get it to work. Probably it was just defective, but I'm afraid to try again.

Re: Broke my phone pretty badly...
I'm sure they run into plenty of people who are dumb or don't want the hassle of swapping. I guess I can't blame them for trying to max out profits, but one has to wonder if it's a kind of racket where they send whatever is in stock even if it's wrong and try to fix it later.

Re: Broke my phone pretty badly...
Never heard of them but I feel for you. I got a new phone a few weeks back and it arrived without the case that I ordered, but I activated it and used it anyway. Within two days the slim slippery sucker had fallen out of my pocket and I ran it over with a creeper. Broke the screen, first time for me...

Third, there remains the question whether or not Asian* cryptotoken mining farms will consider the 30 series useful for themselves ( * = i.e. the ones which would wheel truckloads of devices right out of the back gates of the factories). I'm not up to date if these farms are fully working with ASIC...

Used Nvidia GPU Market
As more info comes out about the highly disruptive RTX 3000 series release, I've heard that many 2080ti owners are dumping their GPUs, but the information available makes it seem as if they would need to be had for less than $500 to be a good value. They are nowhere near that right now, afaict. It'd...
