Re: [SiDock@home] SiDock@home is going to join Gridcoin

Grid con  There are some compelling arguments being made about why blockchain has utility being made by smart people, some of whom I find credible. The current method of "proof of work" has some serious downsides re energy intensity, but with the advent of "proof of stake," these arguments get ...

Re: Rosetta python project 1.02 (vbox64) application

The figure I had set was too high, 95% of disk space. I've lowered it a little, and am shopping for a larger SSD. 256GB is too small these days for a 56 thread host. In my case, so much space was consumed that I was unable to log in.

Re: Rosetta python project 1.02 (vbox64) application

I don't mind vbox jobs, but those are pretty high requirements. I thought I had it figured out by running a limited number of tasks, but it wasn't limited enough!

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.

Well... this probably isn't the proper venue for this discussion. But I will say that utilities that make use of renewables are also deploying energy storage systems as fast as they can, regardless of the energy conversion penalty. That might make plenty of room for dissent against the grid-as-batte...

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.

For the moment, putting my excess energy back on the grid is the perfect energy storage system Only strictly selfishly speaking. California, for instance, still relies on coal burning (out of state and imported) to fill in when renewables aren't meeting demand. Grid is not actual storage, it only a...

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.

More solar, and more Powerwalls! Might have missed the boat on power wall. Tesla is now only selling them with solar roof systems. They only work when the power goes out too, so it’s pretty expensive for minimal use. Certainly agree with more solar! Well solar doesn't reach its potential without so...

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.

Since Threadripper is unlocked, theoretically it could be underclocked to be more like an Epyc. I'm not sure if it is any more cost-effective, though. But for my purposes, I will be staying with the AM4 platform for the foreseeable future. Epyc is too much money, and the old Xeons are too power hung...

Re: Weird issue with hard drive

I might put the drive into another system and see if the problem is replicated there. I use FreeNAS for my NAS, but I don't run GPUs in it either. It's actually my only single-purpose box. Win 7 seems like a sub-optimal choice for a NAS, but if the 280x's need to be in there, it's understandable I g...

Somewhat related, I would like to find 120mm fans that have durability as their main feature. MTBF is not a spec that is found often when shopping for fans. Looks like a little over $220/month if amortized out over 2 years. I'm willing to sign up for a monthly payment of a percentage of that, if we can get enough others to help.

Re: Server ordered

Good ol' Westmere! I'm not sure if you will need 32GB, but 4GB is a little light. IIRC, that's a 3-channel memory system, so the optimal memory config would probably be 12, 24, or 48GB for all channels populated evenly.

I figured you might be trying to avoid copyright issues, but I don't even know if a volunteer computing project out of Berkeley would even be copyrighted, and even if so, our use of it would probably be allowed if it was not for profit.

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.

I have had good luck with CPUs, but not perfect luck. I've had quite a few Haswell Xeons get to me with at least one memory channel bad. Looking at prices, performance, and power use, according to my little spreadsheet, the best bang for the buck is simply the 3700X right now. All the Zen3's and Ze...
