Re: How do you pronounce "BOINC"
Round these here parts, "boink" was slang for sexual relations. I say BOINC the same way. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/boink I say/think it as "boink", hence the last line in my signature on the Anandtech forums.. ;) "I did RC5, but I didn't flush." - Bil...

Re: FS: 2x E5-2678v3
My Dell Precision T5810 is now running with 24 threads instead of 12! Each thread is slower, but with twice as many it should be about a 33-50% overall upgrade in processing power.

Yes, single socket computer and not really conducive to replacing the motherboard due to the layout of the case. And it already has 64GB of RAM.. :) I do think I'd like to get one of those CPUs if you're willing to split them up. I actually have two of these computers, but one of them is sometimes u...

Re: FS: 2x E5-2678v3
Do you still have these? It just occurred to me that this might be a modest upgrade to my E5-1650 v4. Significantly slower cores, but twice as many of them. The big question is if they are compatible with the motherboard in my Dell Precision T5810 computer that is currently running the E5-1650 v4 CP...

Re: R9 280X killer? :D
Now that I've had a chance to test out most of the GPU projects on the Quadro K2200 machine, it looks like the old cards do very well on Einstein and Moo!, moderately well on most other projects, and REALLY REALLY REALLY bad on MilkyWay. Each card averaged about 100-150K per day on Einstein and Moo!...

Re: R9 280X killer? :D
Thank you for the info. It looks like the computer has "graduated" from the cuda31 tasks that were running a single task on all four GPUs and they are now running cuda60 tasks, with four tasks running separately on the four GPUs. I'm interested to see the results on the different applicati...

Not sure where else to put this, but it is about the same computer so I wanted to share something else I thought was interesting... I switched the 4x K2200 GPUs over to Moo! Wrapper as the next project in my testing, and was very surprised to see a single task running, using "0.2C + 4NV (device...

Re: R9 280X killer? :D
I have to leave the K2200s running MilkyWay for at least another day or two because I'm not at home to switch them to another project even if I wanted to. It's probably best to do that anyway since MilkyWay only does one stats update per day so it takes a while for the numbers to balance out. Howeve...

Re: R9 280X killer? :D
Remember that it's four of the cards beating one 280X and three would be just about even in PPD. So it's nice if they do well at very low electricity usage, but one at a time they aren't very powerful... One nice thing is that they are very thin single slot cards, so they can fit in boards that don'...

R9 280X killer? :D
This is a low end build and probably not relevant to anyone but me, but I thought it was interesting and is related to power usage so I wanted to share... As some of you know from the other forums, I recently put together a computer from 'spare parts' that has four Nvidia Quadro K2200 GPUs in it. I'...

Re: Einstein - Improved apps for nvidia cards
I didn't want to uninstall the current drivers, install old drivers, test, and then reinstall the new drivers again, so I've only had the K2200s run a few tasks with the new drivers. I'm not 100% certain, but it does look like the old cards are not getting new new optimized applications since they a...

Google says the K2200 only has compute capability 5.0 so I guess it probably won't work for those cards. I'll try it and see what happens.

Re: Einstein - Improved apps for nvidia cards
Thank you for the suggestion. I had looked in CPU-Z but didn't realize there was a drop-down list on the Advanced tab.. :) It says "OpenCL 3.0 CUDA 11.4.136" for the Platform Version, and "OpenCL C 1.2" for the C Version. Interestingly enough, GPU-Z says the same thing for my rea...

Re: Einstein - Improved apps for nvidia cards
Is the OpenCL version purely dependent on the driver, or does it also depend on the card?
For instance, I'm trying to figure out if my GTX 1060 and Quadro P4000 cards support OpenCL 3.0 or not. They both have the appropriate GTX and Quadro version 472.12 drivers installed.

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.
The dual Xeon build is an interesting idea for a bunch of cores at a not horrible cost. Not necessarily very economical to run long term, though. Those Xeon E5-2683 V3 processors run 120 Watts each so the power cost will add up a bit over time. Still, for under $700 for a complete system, that's not...

Re: Low power video card
I just realized today that I might have something that would work well for you folks still trying to find low power cards. I have a storage bin full of Quadro 2000 cards (just 2000, no K, M, or P) that were pulled from working machines at work a while back. I don't know what the exact idle power dra...

2080 Super for $650 on the Anandtech forums
I have no budget for big toys, but someone here might be interested: https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/fs-t-msi-2080-super-ventus-oc-xs-8gb-1x16gb-ddr4-2x8gb-ddr4-g-skill-eero.2589738/ It's actually been listed for almost two weeks, so maybe an option for a bit of bargaining on the price as well,...

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited
Originally, both <cpu_usage> and <gpu_usage> are doing the same: They inform boinc-client's task scheduler how the application behaves. But they do not control the application itself. Only a few applications (vboxwrapper and some other multithreaded applications) have re-purposed <cpu_usage> and us...

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited
Since I have temporary use of a Quadro RTX 3000, I've been playing with it (stress testing ;)) and decided to let it have a go at the MLC GPU app for a bit. Running a single GPU task with the CPU idle, Task Manager in Windows showed that it was using about 1.33 CPU threads and GPU-Z showed about 25-...

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited
I can't really test in Linux, but I can confirm that at least with my wimpy GPUs (GTX 750ti and GTX 1060) that GPU utilization is near 100% with a single task running and a single CPU core/thread free.

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited
The 750Ti is running at 100% utilization with a single CPU core free on the i7-4790, so this is probably only an issue with fast GPUs.

Re: Low power video card
Another possible cheap option if you can find one, is the GTX 750ti. GPU-Z is saying that the 750ti in my daughter's computer uses 0.9W at idle. I don't know if I trust that number, but it's pretty impressive if true.

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited
I have the GTX 750ti in my daughters' computer (with an i7-4790) running MLC right now. It only gets about 8-10 hours of run time per day since they actually use that computer a lot for school and other stuff, and it's averaging a massive 46K per day over the 6 days I've had it attached to the proje...

Re: Low power video card
The GTX 1030 is cheaper than the 1050, but from what I can find it idles a few watts higher than the 1050 at around 8 watts. It's not a huge difference so could be worth it for the cost difference between the cards.

Re: Low power video card
I don't see anything official, but I found an article on Tom's Hardware that says the GTX 1050 (not ti) uses 3-5 watts when idling. Not sure it fits the "cheap" category, though, since pretty much all graphics cards are ridiculous right now... This chart doesn't include some of the least p...
