Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.

The dual Xeon build is an interesting idea for a bunch of cores at a not horrible cost. Not necessarily very economical to run long term, though. Those Xeon E5-2683 V3 processors run 120 Watts each so the power cost will add up a bit over time. Still, for under $700 for a complete system, that's not...

I have about 50 of them, so no need for a line unless someone wants to really go nuts with them. ;)

Re: Low power video card

I just realized today that I might have something that would work well for you folks still trying to find low power cards. I have a storage bin full of Quadro 2000 cards (just 2000, no K, M, or P) that were pulled from working machines at work a while back. I don't know what the exact idle power dra...

2080 Super for $650 on the Anandtech forums

I have no budget for big toys, but someone here might be interested: https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/fs-t-msi-2080-super-ventus-oc-xs-8gb-1x16gb-ddr4-2x8gb-ddr4-g-skill-eero.2589738/ It's actually been listed for almost two weeks, so maybe an option for a bit of bargaining on the price as well,...

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited

Originally, both <cpu_usage> and <gpu_usage> are doing the same: They inform boinc-client's task scheduler how the application behaves. But they do not control the application itself. Only a few applications (vboxwrapper and some other multithreaded applications) have re-purposed <cpu_usage> and us...

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited

Since I have temporary use of a Quadro RTX 3000, I've been playing with it (stress testing ;)) and decided to let it have a go at the MLC GPU app for a bit. Running a single GPU task with the CPU idle, Task Manager in Windows showed that it was using about 1.33 CPU threads and GPU-Z showed about 25-...

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited

I can't really test in Linux, but I can confirm that at least with my wimpy GPUs (GTX 750ti and GTX 1060) that GPU utilization is near 100% with a single task running and a single CPU core/thread free.

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited

The 750Ti is running at 100% utilization with a single CPU core free on the i7-4790, so this is probably only an issue with fast GPUs.

Re: Low power video card

Another possible cheap option if you can find one, is the GTX 750ti. GPU-Z is saying that the 750ti in my daughter's computer uses 0.9W at idle. I don't know if I trust that number, but it's pretty impressive if true.

Re: MLC@Home Cuda app is CPU limited

I have the GTX 750ti in my daughters' computer (with an i7-4790) running MLC right now. It only gets about 8-10 hours of run time per day since they actually use that computer a lot for school and other stuff, and it's averaging a massive 46K per day over the 6 days I've had it attached to the proje...

Re: Low power video card

The GTX 1030 is cheaper than the 1050, but from what I can find it idles a few watts higher than the 1050 at around 8 watts. It's not a huge difference so could be worth it for the cost difference between the cards.

Re: Low power video card

I don't see anything official, but I found an article on Tom's Hardware that says the GTX 1050 (not ti) uses 3-5 watts when idling. Not sure it fits the "cheap" category, though, since pretty much all graphics cards are ridiculous right now... This chart doesn't include some of the least power hungr...

Re: Running Linux VM under Windows, performance hit?

I have a Hyper-V VM running Linux Mint 20 on my 3900X computer running Windows 10. I have it mostly for projects that only work in Linux, so I haven't really tested projects directly in both Windows and Linux to see how they compare. I have the VM configured to allow access to all 24 cores/threads a...
