WCG MIP Ending
Looks like the project is ending: Dear World Community Grid volunteers, Thank you for your heroic contributions to the Microbiome Immunity Project! Your efforts have allowed us to predict the structures of more than 330,000 proteins contained in the microbiome, dramatically improving our understandi...

Re: [SiDock@home] Release CmDock v 0.1.2
The raspberry pi version locked up my test 8GB pi 4 every 2 hours. I just switched it to a known good project (rosetta) to verify nothing is wrong with the pi.

Does Ram Latency make any Difference for any projects?
After much tweaking and experimentation, I have found the only way to fully expunge WHEA errors from my new machine is top drop ram frequency to 3667. While a new bios may eventually raise this, for now I'm stuck at 3667. I was toying with the idea of picking up a CL 14-14-14 3600 or 3800 32GB kit (...

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.
For the moment, putting my excess energy back on the grid is the perfect energy storage system Only strictly selfishly speaking. California, for instance, still relies on coal burning (out of state and imported) to fill in when renewables aren't meeting demand. Grid is not actual storage, it only a...

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.
For the moment, putting my excess energy back on the grid is the perfect energy storage system - I put 100kwh on the grid, I can losslessly get 100kwh back later. Long term, if we get enough people with solar that we generate more out here in the DC area than we use during the day, storage becomes a...

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.
My primary concern has been in points per watt given that I have a limited amount of solar power and electricity past that is 17.7 cents kw/h. I haven’t moved up to any true server grade components, and It’s pretty tough to beat the 5950x in eco mode on points per watt. I really want to see the new...

Re: 4 x Raspberry Pi Cluster on Hardforum
Interesting, I didn't know the fans were that bad. Maybe in 6 months if they start to fail it'll be a good time to buy another Pi and put them all in a 4x Pi case like this one - https://www.amazon.com/GeeekPi-Raspberry-Cluster-Stackable-4-Layers/dp/B083FDHPBH The Geek pi stacking case like that is...

Re: 4 x Raspberry Pi Cluster on Hardforum
I have 3 of these kits and bought them from this seller - https://hardforum.com/threads/fs-raspberry-pi-4-4gb-kit-s.2007467/#post-1044993430 It took awhile to get, but it was when the US had real bad weather, so I don't fault the seller and once I got them they were as described. They had sd cards ...

Re: 4 x Raspberry Pi Cluster on Hardforum
If you consider Raspberry Pi 4 for experiments in power efficiency, keep in mind that its processor is on a 28 nm node. Its efficiency is saved by the slow clock (1.5 GHz) and by the SBC's minimalism. Regarding a stack of these, wouldn't a DIY power supply be not only much cheaper than a PoE soluti...

Re: 4 x Raspberry Pi Cluster on Hardforum
I really need to build a Pi cluster. Do it for fun, but it has limits for power efficiency (5950 or EPYC is certainly more efficient). Managing all the systems is also a little annoying, but that’s really limited to working with Rosetta on 4GB pis. About once every other month, one of them will cra...

Re: 4 x Raspberry Pi Cluster on Hardforum
It’s probably a touch expensive, at least if you have a microcenter nearby. They are always running $5 off or $10 off specials on pi 4s. If you’re doing distributed computing on those pis, you really want better airflow - both the poe hat and the pi itself will have stability issues at 100% load wit...

Re: Low power video card
I could see picking up a 1010 to replace my 710 I have sitting sitting around as a spare. The old 710 has gotten used more than I expected, and the 1010 is certain to be faster and hopefully more efficient.

Re: Low power video card
A number of motherboards will let you run headless (no video card). I have a GeForce 710 as a spare that I can toss into a headless system for when I need to troubleshoot.

Re: Low power video card
I’m guessing that the older the card, with the older manufacturing process, the higher the idle / 2d power draw. Should check idle power of something like a 1650.

Re: F@H Challenge thread, 2021
For a contest, I could switch back to fold for [H] like I used to ages ago to put some more points on the [H] side. The problem is I’m just not worth very many points until I can secure a 3080 or two - 1x 1080ti isn’t what it used to be. My 3am trips to microcenter netted me a processor, and confirm...
