Re: [PrimeGrid] Good Riddance 2020! Challenge starts January 14th

I'm not sure if this is a good place to put this, but I am wondering why this computer: http://www.primegrid.com/show_host_detail.php?hostid=533260 Is taking 8 hours to finish WUs! It is a little underclocked, to 3.6GHz I believe, and running 6 tasks of 1 thread each. If this keeps up, I'm going to ...

In drag racing they call this "stacking tenths," referring to arriving just a tenth of a second faster at the finish. One small change may not seem to make a difference, but many small changes do.

Thanks for being patient with such elementary queries, Stefan. I don't think I can understate how valuable your advice has been over the years.

Re: Linux: How to disable mitigations for CPU vulnerabilities

I did not rtfm but I skimmed it, and didn't find how to put more than one command in that line. Some of my PCs have this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet vsyscall=emulate" I'm not sure how to add that in, it looks like just put "mitigations=off" into the quotation marks...? For...

most of us run it now because of its performance advantage Well, you were right! Don't know what circumstance I was remembering regarding the GPUs, but I'm seeing about a 15-30% on Collatz work depending on card. Hope to see the same or close on the CPUs. The performance advantage varies by project...

Re: Remote access of networked machines

Right now I am using AnyDesk. It connects fairly consistently to Linux and Windows machines, but I have had some bad artifacting problems with it. It doesn't nag me about having too many computers, and has proven to be the path of least resistance for me so far. I'd like to graduate to something mor...

Re: Running Linux VM under Windows, performance hit?

I impetuously fired up an old existing Mint VM in Windows 10 based on some hints that running Numberfields in it might be worthy. Then Boinc manager quit working in it for some reason. Now I have installed boinctui and am manually aborting hundreds of NF WUs, apparently the client was set to downloa...

Re: Family affairs...New son-in-law vs daughter

Wow... Not sure what to say here. While it's not expected that any son-in-law of mine be proficient in auto repair, what he MUST be proficient in is taking care of my daughter. Trying to kill her with a botched brake job would not fit the bill, at all. Acting nonchalant about it would probably earn ...

Re: Help With Asus Z10PC-D8

My plan was to simply meld a power strip with a 220V plug, and paint danger warnings all over it. Point taken about surge protection, though. Honestly to be safe (well, less dangerous  ), an integrated circuit breaker should be included that has a more appropriate amperage rating. For instance,...

Re: Help With Asus Z10PC-D8

It was anticipated that there would be an efficiency regression going to the higher clock speed. I will need to re-shuffle the positions of my computers since for a while now I have had access to a second circuit. That, or cobble together a way of supplying 220V since there is a 220V outlet near a c...

Re: Help With Asus Z10PC-D8

I'm certain they will put out more. 4 more threads per CPU, and an additional 400MHz at full load, and a reported ~5% IPC uplift. At this point I would be comparing between two different systems, but I would be happy to do some checking, especially if you can think of something quick and dirty that ...

Re: Help With Asus Z10PC-D8

Is it possible your PSU is the problem? I see you have both 8 pin connectors plugged into the MB so that's good. I see in the manual on p 2-18 that it won't post if there's not enough power. I know this is a stretch but I can't think of anything else to try. E5-2690V4 is 135 W TDP E5-2680V3 is 120 ...

Re: Help With Asus Z10PC-D8

I did inspect the sockets again with more emphasis on CPU 1, they looked great. Updated to a newer BIOS. Nothing helped. BUT, they work in my X10DRL with the one bad channel. So they are humming away now, but with less than 1GB per thread which I don't like. I think I am probably done spending a lot...

Re: Low power video card

I haven't measured low power GPUs. The assumption might be to buy a card with the smallest (newest) process, and the smallest heat sink. I think there are a few out there that will run passive, that would indicate low power consumption.

I haven't. It didn't occur to me that RAM might be a problem, since it runs with either CPU in one socket fully populated with RAM. It's a head scratcher for me.

Re: Help With Asus Z10PC-D8

They aren't ES, and the BIOS correctly reported the CPU type.

I didn't want to jump to the very latest BIOS, but the one I used is listed as supporting the 2690v4. I figured that an older BIOS had less chance of having performance robbing exploit mitigations.

Help With Asus Z10PC-D8

Hey guys, I have an ASUS Z10PC-D8 that I've tried to upgrade from Xeon E5-2678v3 to E5-2690v4, with limited success. Here's a list of the steps I took and what happened. Start with running system with 2x 2678v3 installed. All 8 RAM slots populated, 64GB. Both EPS 8-pin connecters used. 800W Corsair ...

Looks like AT frowns on hot linking! But interestingly enough, I have a system that would spontaneously reboot once in a while only when running Quchem. It turned out to be a low hours Seasonic Gold PSU that was the problem. At least try some other known good PSU, I'd think. Looks like that Corsair ...
