Re: Remote access of networked machines

I have all my DC machines set to auto ogin and not to lock the computer after any time period. I don't have anything on them other than BOINC so there didn't seem to be any security concerns in doing so. The only performance issues I've had with TeamViewer are mostly related to not having a monitor ...

Re: Remote access of networked machines

I appreciate the replies. I rarely need to connect through the internet it's mostly on the local network, but it definitely is nice to be able to connect through the internet when there is a need to. I'll take a look at Anydesk. I was somewhat expecting replies like "Oh man I can't believe you'...

Remote access of networked machines

This seemed to make more sense in this subforum since it's not a hardware topic, but I was wondering how most people are controlling the machines on their network or through the internet. If this topic has been covered previously let me know but I couldn't find anything. Over the years I've used VNC...

Re: Low power video card

If I could go back and do it all over again I probably would have tried to go with higher core count and dual socket machines vs a higher quantity of single socket lower core count machines. I have more computers than I intended on having initially(probably pretty common in distributed computing), a...

Re: Low power video card

  180nm I shouldn't be shocked, the card I purchased was manufactured in 2005, but it was just surprising seeing such a high number The Radeon 6450 arrived today. It's a very basic passively cooled card with a fairly small heatsink. I got my dual boot setup and switched over to Linux for...

Re: Low power video card

I setup a PC today, and I'm using it to test the video card power usage. It is a 3900X that I have set to 88 watts PPT and has a gold rated Seasonic Focus power supply. I'm running Windows currently since it has more options for graphics card monitoring software, but once I'm done testing it the mac...

Re: Low power video card

I have a 750ti sitting here waiting to be installed but I was under the impression there were options with lower power usage. Once I receive the other cards I ordered I'll do some comparisons including with the 750ti. I'm still considering trying a PCI Express to PCI adapter and one of those PCI ATI...

Re: F@H Challenge thread, 2021

For a contest, I could switch back to fold for [H] like I used to ages ago to put some more points on the [H] side. The problem is I’m just not worth very many points until I can secure a 3080 or two - 1x 1080ti isn’t what it used to be. My 3am trips to microcenter netted me a processor, and confir...

Re: Low power video card

Curiosity got the best of me, and I ordered a low powered passive AMD card(I think a 6450, but it wasn't real clear) and a Matrox card(from 2005!). I have an ATI 3450 currently in use, and it seems to work fine, but I haven't measured the power usage. The Matrox is $21 shipped, the AMD card is $13 s...

Re: Running Linux VM under Windows, performance hit?

My experience was similar, the Linux tasks ran like garbage compared to native Windows. I was waiting until the tasks validated to make sure the credit was similar, but with ODLK1 the Linux VM tasks took twice as long as native Windows for the same credit. I didn't turn off hyperthreading, but it wa...

Re: Low power video card

This thread has gotten fairly interesting. I didn't expect modern cards to be as efficient as they are at idle. I think ultimately this is going to end up being a preference issue, not a technical issue. My methodology for DC used to be having low end CPU machines that have video cards(and only crun...

Re: Running Linux VM under Windows, performance hit?

I think I need to test this not on my main machine since it's making it run kind of crappy (plus I'm influencing the results by using it while it runs), but it's the only one I have dual boot setup on. So far all I've concluded is if you're running Universe, and all you have available is Windows it'...

Re: Running Linux VM under Windows, performance hit?

I am not sure UNIVERSE is a good test, since it is so well optimized for the Mint 20 (and other updated distro's) kernel. But it most certainly is promising to see the Linux VM under Windows still shows the speed bump associated with that kernel. I guess other than GPU projects, I'm not sure that L...

Re: Running Linux VM under Windows, performance hit?

I started with virtualbox and then switched to windows hyper-v. Did see some improvement due to hyper-v been closer to bare metal. See article here: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/virtualbox-vs-vmware-vs-hyper-v/ . I ran Universe with Ubuntu 20.04 with hyper-V when I'm lazy to swap out the SSD. All ...

Re: Running Linux VM under Windows, performance hit?

I was wondering the exact opposite as well (not trying to derail your thread though). I was thinking of spinning up some Windows VM's to run Gerasim on my Linux machines. I'll be curious to see if anybody tested the overhead involved with the VM's. My PC is dual boot, I'm testing a Linux Mint 20 VM ...

Re: Help With Asus Z10PC-D8

Also as a bonus, I dug out a Z10PC-D8 that had one bad socket, I'm going to use it as a part-time rig (we all know what happens with those ideas of moderation, haha). So, I have 1 2678v3 for super cheap to a good home. If I was to ebay it I would ask $75 shipped, maybe someone here would give me $5...

I know you just got them running, but I'd be curious what you think of the performance once you have a good idea on it. I've been trying to make some decisions on my own Haswell Xeon stuff. Re: Low power video card

A number of motherboards will let you run headless (no video card). I have a GeForce 710 as a spare that I can toss into a headless system for when I need to troubleshoot. I'll have to try that again. Last time I had tried it most wouldn't POST, and the ones that did were really weird about how rem...

Re: Low power video card

I’m guessing that the older the card, with the older manufacturing process, the higher the idle / 2d power draw. Should check idle power of something like a 1650. I appreciate the suggestion. I should have been more clear in my original post about what I'm looking to accomplish, but I was hoping fo...

Re: Low power video card

I appreciate the suggestions, and I'll look into those. Fortunately most of these cards are really inexpensive used, so maybe I should just pick up a few and test them out. I was hoping to get something fairly recent, but it doesn't seem like there's much market any more for low power cards for just...

Yeah, I might head over there today and bring it all home to check out at leisure. Maybe I'll notice something different the second time around. Re: Help With Asus Z10PC-D8

Probably the only way would be to get one more of the same model CPU and then try it with each one you already have to see if one doesn't work. That would really be a bummer then though if you still have issues with all 3. If you decide to use them a single socket processors instead of in a dual pro...

Low power video card

I was curious if anybody had measured power usage with a Kill-a-watt or had any opinion on the best low power video card to use for a machine with no onboard video. Not for running DC on the video card but just so it POSTs and has video output. Sometimes it is nice to have a machine that is CPU crun...

Re: Help With Asus Z10PC-D8

I haven't. It didn't occur to me that RAM might be a problem, since it runs with either CPU in one socket fully populated with RAM. It's a head scratcher for me. I agree with your train of thought, and it's probably not going to be RAM related, but that is generally my first step in troubleshooting...

Re: Used CPU Discussion

I didn't mention this in my post crashtech but I almost always leave 2 threads open per GPU even on my 3900x machines. My hope being that this allows it to feed it with a physical core, or at least 2 hyperthreaded/SMT ones. I have noticed some slowdown/bottlenecking on the Xeon when only leaving 1 t...
