Re: Pfizer/BioNtech covid-19 vaccine looks encouraging

From merely a few months ago: I just heard a radio broadcast interview with the leader of an immunological and vaccine research team of Berlin Charité. The discussion turned to the sometimes very low efficiency of vaccines against seasonal flu. In this context, he stated that corona viruses have a s...

A few random thoughts: – sprint project announcements – 0 h period for disclosure of the sprint project sounds stressful. But it favors participants who bring just one or two computers, and smaller computers. I am not one of those participants myself, but I see this aspect as a plus. On the other ha...

Re: 3-2021 Big Core Options under $2,000.

From the figures which I have seen so far, the performance and performance/W difference between Rome and Milan is negligible in workloads which scale well to all cores, such as almost all BOINC projects which use CPU but not GPU. On the used market, there may occasionally be opportunities to snag so...

Near miss: "2001 FO32" passing the 3rd rock from the sun

Today, an asteroid with the rather numerical name 2001 FO32 is going to pass Earth at a distance of 6.6e9 feet. Sounds close — and it is. But it's still several times the distance between Earth and Moon. Inhabitants of the South half of this rock, or near the equator, may have a peek if they bring g...

Right now it is somewhat difficult to receive tasks.

I was heating the home with TN-Grid lately. I'll tweak my setup now and check back tomorrow whether or not I will have to switch to some other project.

It's true. They also weren't among the earliest to bet on the viability of mRNA vaccines, but they had hopes for more classic vaccines, e.g. a French development which then went nowhere. Also, approval processes took more time than in some other countries (IMO, it's good to be thorough) although the...

If they make [GT 1010's] TBP ≈20 W, not 30 W like reported, then it could be a 1:1 GT 710 replacement, which they then could phase out. I presume though that GP108, like the larger Pascal chips, does not include a D/A converter for VGA support anymore. GT 1030 cards with VGA output exist, but they ...

While I never profiled its effects, I have mitigations off on all of my DC-dedicated computers.
It was a small nuisance to figure out how to set the GRUB config accordingly in Mint.
In OpenSuse, there is a dialogue for this in their central system management GUI.

From what I remember, the now long submerged Acoustics@home had better performance under Windows than under Linux. They linked the Windows build against a heavily optimized non-free math library, while the Linux build had to make do with a version which lacked all the optimizations.

Baseboard Management Controllers (BMCs) are not only low-power video cards, they also allow for remote management, even down to remote access to the BIOS. Downside: They don't come as add-in boards; you need to buy a mainboard with them. Related news: https://www.anandtech.com/show/16349/the-asrock-...
