Server ordered

Post by Skillz »

Bought a server to host this.

It's a dual Intel L5640 Xeon with 32GB RAM and two, 2TB SATA drives. Server will be in a datacenter with a 1Gbps connection.

Hope this will handle whatever load the site generates.

Server is setup and running now.

Just got to get the SSL Cert setup for the domains and she'll be ready.

Still working things out with the company who I've reached out to for building the site. Should have a quote on how much it costs in the next day or two.

These are the specs of the server.

Motherboard: X8DTU (supermicro) Version: 1234567890

Memory:
description: DIMM 1066 MHz (0.9 ns)
product: NT4GC72B4NA1NL-BE
vendor: Nanya
serial: 642ABD5C
size: 4GiB
width: 64 bits
clock: 1066MHz (0.9ns)

Seems this board only has SATA2, therefore I believe I am going to get a PCIe SSD for the database as well as upgrade the 32GB of RAM. Max supported is 292GB so Im going to check on how much more RAM will cost.

I am sure all of this will be overkill for the server, but I would ideally like the site to be extremely fast with absolutely no slow downs.

Good ol' Westmere! I'm not sure if you will need 32GB, but 4GB is a little light. IIRC, that's a 3-channel memory system, so the optimal memory config would probably be 12, 24, or 48GB for all channels populated evenly.

It has 32GB installed already. It's 4GB modules.

Anyone wanna help find some faster storage options for this server?

I know for sure the 2TB spinners are slow. It's only got PCIe 2.0 I think. So would a PCIe drive be faster than SATA SSDs? If so, how much faster?

The RAID controller supports RAID 10 so I could get 4 reasonably sized SSDs and run them in RAID 10 for a bit more read speed.

Thoughts?

There are cheap PCIe to NVME adapters, but I don't know how they would work on older stuff

I think it's a 1U server chassis. So probably not a lot of room. I'll email the data center and ask here shortly.

I think a 1U is gonna need conventional 2.5" SATA SSDs.

Would four of these https://www.newegg.com/samsung-883-dct- ... klink=true

In RAID 10 offer a good bit more performance than a SATA HDD?

I'm gonna run the operating system off the HDD, but the web site and database will run off the RAID array.

Ordered 192GB kit of RAM to upgrade the server from the 32GB it currently has.

$385 w/ tax

https://www.ebay.com/itm/221976339661?s ... 1438.l2649

Soon as they come in, I will inspect them, then ship them to the datacenter and pay them to install them.
