eBay: 1U GPU server setups

1U 4 Bay Server Mining 3 GPU Tesla Slot 2x Xeon E5-2683 V3 28 Core 64GB DDR4 2PS

Seems this would be a pretty powerful GPU cruncher with some decently strong CPUs. 56 v3 Xeon threads.

Over a grand though, hmm. Seems like you could piece something together for less, but there is something to be said for an integrated system.

Might cut it a bit close on power too if plugged into a standard outlet. It's 1000 watts plugged into a normal outlet, 1600 watts on a 240v outlet. 3 video cards plus 56 Xeon cores crunching could be close to 1000 watts.

Well this won't require "modified" cooling for GPUs that are passive such as the P100 or S9150.

I don't think that system would draw 1000W. The CPUs full draw would be probably around 200W and if going with P100 then each one of them are drawing ~175W. Which is less than 1000W combined.

Also a normal 15A 120v breaker is over 1600W.

I just meant the power supply in the unit is rated at 1000 watts at 120v, 1600 watts at 240v. If the P100 shows 175 w in Nvidia-smi or other monitoring tools it's likely that it's drawing more than that. I don't have a P100 but that has been my experience with other cards at least. It probably wouldn't exceed 1000 watts, but I generally try to have some extra headroom when sizing a power supply. I did send them a low ball make an offer(and would be running it at 240v), so we'll see what happens with that.

I think it could exceed 1000W for sure if the CPUs anf GPUs were crunching simultaneously.

It's got dual PSUs and they work together. So if the power draw is 1000W each PSU will be supplying 500W each.

What was your low-ball offer?

I didn't think about the redundant PSU's load balancing. The low ball offer was $550. I don't know that I think those machines are worth more than maybe $750 personally.

Here's a 2U with a more sane pricetag, no RAM though.

How much will 64GB cost though? I'm sure less than the difference, but how much less?

Not sure, but I would gravitate to taller servers because I think they will likely be quieter.

I think it depends on ambient temp a lot. I have a 1U server in my apartment and I run it under full 100% load. As long as the temp in my apartment is 70F or lower it's no louder than my other rigs, but when it starts getting warm in the apartment then the fans start cranking up and its the loudest thing in the apartment and outside the apartment haha

Yeah 2U fans are 80mm, the ones I have dealt with are much quieter, the little 40mm wind tunnels are crazy loud imo.

Can anyone find 4U GPU servers for cheap? Something that can hold 4+?

This isn't any cheaper but supposedly does 8 GPU's - https://www.ebay.com/itm/393398568695

I seen that too but it doesn't come with CPUs or RAM. So it's going to cost a good bit more.

2U or 4U might still be preferable, if operating server GPUs with unmodified cooler is the goal. This 1U server requires both CPU sockets to be populated in order to put GPUs both on the left hand side and the right hand side. Without CPU2, only one (or maybe both, not sure) of the GPU bays on the left side can be used, not the one bay on the right side. Furthermore, the GPU in the front left would heat the GPU in the back.
